1. Personal Update

I'm back to more of a newsletter format lately with these emails, rather than a simple, single message. It's just that there's a so much going on right now -- with the "911 for Men" launch event, and then the Renewed Man Boot Camp coming up later this month. I'll try to be brief :-)

This email offers you the invitation to a multi-night event called "911 For the Hearts of Men."

The "911 for Men" event will be the kickoff for our launch of the Renewed Man Boot Camp. This will be the full launch of the group that I ran as a pilot program a few months ago. It will be a life-changer for the men who participate!

Finally, the FEATURE in this newsletter is a video I created that talks about addiction as a spectrum, rather than a black and white, either/or thing. I created this video by live-streaming it ... getting ready for the "911 for Men" live-streams!

2. Overview of Upcoming Free online Seminar - "911 For Men"

September 11, 13, and 15

To help promote the launch of the Fall Boot Camp experience, I'm putting out a free, 3-part live seminar: "911 For Men." I use "911" in the title for a reason: I really DO believe that we are in an emergency situation today! Today's Christian men are being challenged on many sides. I will be addressing key issues and concerns in the live-streaming event -- namely, the need for: deeper intimacy, better emotional health, a more honest and meaningful spiritual life, and a greater capacity to resist the distractions and temptations of our overly-sexualized world.

Each Seminar will be live-streamed over youtube.com, at 7:00 PM.

3. Renewed Man Boot Camp: Starting September 18

The Renewed Man Boot Camp is a 12 Week mentoring program for men. It combines: (a) daily teaching through emails and its web site (b) weekly video teaching, combined with (c) small accountability groups and (d) periodic group coaching via zoom. It trains men to establish habits and mindset shifts to help them grow in self-mastery (1 Corinthians 6:12) in response to four pressing challenges for men today:

finding deeper intimacy with their partner
maintaining mental/emotional health
developing an honest and meaningful spiritual life
increasing their capacity to resist the distractions and temptations of our overly sexualized world

These challenges are not unique to our time, but they are especially problematic today … and they all relate and interact together. This program places special emphasis on sexual self mastery, and it does so for two reasons:

our sexuality is a big part of who we are as men, and
our world pushes sexual provocation at us 24/7

Sexual Struggle is a Spectrum ... and you are probably on it

For a variety of reasons, I prefer to talk about "sexual struggle" rather than "sex addiction." When I started working in this field in 2006, I discovered early on how much time and energy I needed to spend helping people come to terms with how to label their behavior -- "Is my problem an addiction, or not?"

It turns out, this is a really unhelpful question. Who cares how you label it? Is it a problem? If so, then it's time to do something about it!

In the video below, I talk about this issue. I also take a look at the DSM-5 -- the handbook therapists and insurance companies use to diagnose mental disorders -- to see the criteria they use to diagnose "addiction" (they use the term "substance abuse disorder"). Applying those criteria to our behavioral issues -- like overeating, gambling, porn use, or other sexual behavior -- can help us understand the seriousness of our problem.
