Today I wanted to reach out and let you know about an article I wrote that just came out in The Banner -- the monthly magazine published by the Christian Reformed Church (the denomination I'm a part
of).
The article is entitled: Understanding and Overcoming Today's Epidemic of Artificial Sex. In it, I make two important claims:
1. Today's technology takes pornography to a different level -- something that is novel historically. It activates the brain's mirror neurons and creates an immersive experience, and for users it becomes an alternative, artificial sexual experience. It provides a "sexual experience" of sorts
without involving another person. The first wave of the sexual revolution made casual sex possible ... this new wave makes artificial sex possible.
2. The phenomena of artificial sex is bigger, different, and more dangerous than many religious people really understand. It fundamentally pushes people in the wrong direction -- AWAY from person-to-person intimacy, and into
isolation. The strongest anti-porn voices today are not religious leaders who talk about the immorality of the lust it generates ... rather, it's secular and even atheistic psychologists and neuroscientists who point to its destructiveness to peoples' mental and relational health.
