In this video I respond to the question I'm sometimes asked: "Why is it that Christians seem to struggle MORE with getting and staying sober?" You would think that, with the power of God at work in their lives, it should be easier for them, right? Yes it should, and when our faith is
functioning properly, it does. But that's not always the case! I talk about two challenges I see with Christian people:

1. They feel added shame because they "shouldn't be struggling with this" -- and therefore, continue in isolation, and don't get the help they need. (Trying to do recovery with just "Jesus and me" -- and not involving anyone else -- pretty much never works.)

2. They harbor inaccurate beliefs about God and the spiritual life -- just because someone goes to a Christian church doesn't mean they have an accurate understanding of who God is and how the spiritual life works. Many Christian people have a mixture of beliefs -- many of which they haven't fully thought through -- and they just accept them because they've heard them repeated. Some of these beliefs need to be questioned and dropped.

For long term recovery to be a reality, I am convinced that many Christians will need to unlearn some things, as well as learn other things. And this "unlearning" can be challenging.
